Abstract

<PICT:0413311/IV/1> In the production of artificial filaments, a spinning solution is extruded into an evaporative zone in which a substantially reduced pressure is maintained, and the filaments are then stretched outside said evaporative zone while they still contain a high proportion of solvent. A lubricant or a softening agent may be applied to the filaments as they leave the evaporative zone, and the vapour of a solvent may be fed into the stretching zone. The suction maintained in the evaporative zone is of the order of 5 inches or more of mercury. The invention is particularly applicable to the manufacture of filaments of cellulose esters and ethers. In one form, apparatus according to the invention comprises a spinning cell heated by pipes 10, the spinning jet 7 being mounted on a swivel. The required reduction of pressure is maintained by drawing off the vapours through a pipe 26. After a short travel through the evaporative zone, the bundle of filaments passes into a casing 17 through a very small opening 12 of the kind described in Specification 343,936, then over rollers 15 and 16, and to a cap spinning device 22. The roller 16 rotates faster than the roller 15, so that the filaments are stretched. A wick 14, e.g. of the type described in Specification 392,904, serves to supply solvent or lubricant to the filaments. Air may be drawn off through a pipe 21 leading to a solvent recovery plant. The upper roller 15 may be cooled, and both rollers may be of rustless material. In another form, solvent vapours or air may be admitted to the stretching compartment.
