Abstract

Polyvinyl chloride compositions are stabilised by compounds of formula: <FORM:0849220/IV(a)/1> where R1 is a C1-C6 aliphatic radical or the cyclohexyl group, R11 is a C1-C6 aliphatic radical or the phenylene group, x is 1, 2 or 3 and Z represents a polyglycol chain of formula (CH2-CH2-O)n-CH2-CH2-OH linked to R11 by an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom, n being a number from 1 to 49. Typical compounds are tributyl tin-salicylo-polyglycollic ether: <FORM:0849220/IV(a)/2> tributyl tin -o-di-polyglycollamino-benzoate <FORM:0849220/IV(a)/3> and tributyl tin-polyglycol-thioglycollate <FORM:0849220/IV(a)/4>ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of formula: <FORM:0849220/IV(b)/1> where R1 is a C2-C6 aliphatic radical or the cyclohexyl group R11 is a C2-C6 aliphatic radica or the phenylene group, x is 1, 2 or 3 and Z represents a polyglycol chain of formula (CH2-CH2-O)n-CH2-CH2-OH linked to R" by an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom, n being a number from 1 to 49. They may be prepared by reacting a compound of formula: <FORM:0849220/IV(b)/2> where R1, R11, and x have the meanings above and Y is -OH, -NH2-SH,-COOH,-CONH2-SO2 NH2 or -CO,CH2,CO-, with up to 50 mols of ethylene oxide per mol of organotin compound preferably in the presence of catalysts such as sodium alcoholate, sodium or potassium hydroxide or tin tetrachloride. The organotin starting material may be prepared by reacting organotin halides with alkali metal salts of hydroxy acids, amino acids, mercapto acids, etc. The compounds of the invention may be used as fungicides or bactericides, as lubricant antioxidants and stabilisers for polyvinyl chloride compositions (see Group IV(a)).
