An hydraulically operated pile driver which comprises a striker mass which falls free and is raised by an hydraulic cylinder is characterized in that the fluid exhaust conduit of the hydraulic cylinder is controlled by a valve which is moved to the closed position by the piston of an auxiliary hydraulic cylinder. The apparatus comprises a striker mass 1 concentric with a piston and cylinder assembly 3, 2. At the lower end of the cylinder is a fluid exhaust conduit 15 which can be closed by a valve 10 attached to a piston 6. A pump 13 draws fluid from a tank 14 and feeds a distributer 9. To lift the striker, the distributer is first operated to supply fluid to the cylinder 7 thus closing the valve 10 and then moved to a second position in which fluid passes to the bottom of the cylinder 2 through the conduit 11. At the top of the stroke the valve 10 is opened and the fluid in the cylinder 2 passes to the tank 14 so that the striker 1 and piston 3 are free to fall.
