Abstract

1,236,515. Pneumatic presses. R. P. LICKLITER and E. ABBOTT. 17 April, 1969 [15 July, 1968], No. 19645/69. Heading B5F. In a pneumatic press comprising a bed 10, ram plate 12 and mounting plate 14, a pressure tank 45 mounted on one side of the plate 14 is connected through a passage 57 with a cylinder 31 on the other side of the plate 14, the cylinder 31 containing a piston 34 connected to the ram plate 12, and the passage 57 being controlled by a valve 56 (Fig. 4) located within the tank 45. A second passage 120 connected to the cylinder 31 is controlled by an exhaust valve 110. The pressure tank 45 is connected at all times to a pressure source through a conduit 55. The ram plate 12 is slidable on guide posts (11), its downward movement being limited by adjustable stops 26. Its return movement is effected by springs 24. The control valve 56 and exhaust valve 110 include resilient sealing elements 99, 126 respectively operated by a piston 87 (Fig. 4) in a cylinder 58, and a piston 122 (Fig. 5, not shown) in a cylinder 111 respectively. A solenoid-operated pilot valve (54), Fig. 3 (not shown), controls supply of pressure fluid through conduits 72, 74 to control valve 56 and through a conduit 119 to exhaust valve 110. A control switch 142 mounted on the plate 14 is operated by a member 143 mounted on a threaded rod 144 fixed to the ram plate 12. Member 143 can be adjusted to release an actuator 147 and close switch 142 a preselected time before the end of the downstroke of piston 34; closing of switch 142 moves pilot valve 54 to the exhaust position. The upper face of piston 34 has resilient stops 42 to cushion its upward movement.
