Abstract

847,019. Coating metals electrolytically. SIEMENS EDISON SWAN Ltd. March 26, 1959 [April 25, 1958], No: 13232/58. Class 41. Metals are coated with a layer of insulating material by electrophoresis using as electrolyte a suspension of alumina, in an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate, and magnesium nitrate to which is added a minor amount (up to 1%) of finely divided silica. A potential of about 60 V. is used. The coated surface is then heated in a hydrogen containing atmosphere to convert the nitrates to oxides forming an electrically insulating coating. The aqueous solution preferably includes methyl alcohol.
