Abstract
Electrolytic capacitor electrodes of large effective surface area are produced by coating a core with a layer of hydride of Ta or Nb from a suspension of the hydride and heating in vacuo or in an inert gas to convert the layer into porous sintered metal. The core may be of the same metal (e.g. Ta) as the layer obtained; while the deposition of hydride may be by electrophoresis. In an example a suspension of 1.5 gm. hydride of Ta powder mean size 1 micron is formed in 100 ccm. methyl alcohol containing 5 ccm. of 0.01N aluminium nitrate solution. A Ta wire core cathode and a Ag anode carrying 100 mA. per sq. cm. at 200 volts produce an electrophoretic coating of Ta hydride about 10m thick on the Ta cathode, which is subsequently heated in vacuo at 1900 DEG C. for 3 minutes to give a porous Ta layer. It is then formed in saturated Na Cl solution at 6 volts. In a second example 6 gm. powdered Ta hydride are added to 3 gm. of a mix of 320 gm. polystyrene which has been diluted with 6 ccm. benzene. A layer of the hydride 50m thick is formed on a Ta wire core which is heated in vacuo to 2000 DEG C. for 2 minutes.
