846,997. Aerials; radio navigation. SVENSKA AKTIEBOLAGET GASACCUMULATOR. March 5, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 7062/58. Class 40(7). In a radio beacon which transmits periodically a bearing statement from a directional aerial system rotatable mechanically or electrically and a covering field to prevent erroneous bearings the aerial system is so fed that the azimuthal radiation displacement is zero during a bearing transmission. In one embodiment Figs. 2, 3 the speech-modulated carrier is fed to mechanicallyrotated array 49<SP>1</SP>-54<SP>1</SP> via line 38 and a loop 40 reciprocated in an insulated guide between feeders 41, 42 by wheel 48 which rotates at the product of the aerial speed and the number of bearing statements per 360 degrees. As the aerial rotates during a bearing statement its radiation direction is unchanged due to the counterrotational slewing arising from effective displacement of feed points 38<SP>1</SP>, 38<SP>11</SP> along lines 55, 56. Similar slewing arrangements are made for the complementary covering-field tone emissions. In another embodiment Fig. 8 the bearing signal is fed to rotor elements 105-110 of a commutated rotating-field fixed aerial system (see Specification 846,998). As the elements rotate the near-constant separation between them and aerial feeder stator elements 91-96 as the bearing statement ensues causes the radiation direction to remain fixed.
