Abstract

625,287. Transformers. STANDARDTELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1946, No. 30400. Convention date, June 27, 1945. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (c)] In a radio goniometer, an annular rotor to which is connected a pair of leads at diametrically opposite points is arranged parallel to and around the same axis of annular generation as one or more annular stators which are connected to an antenna system at symmetrically arranged points, the points of connection of the leads to the rotor being rotatable about the axis. The goniometer rotor and stator comprise respectively two conductive rings 3, 2. Four aerials 7-10 forming an Adcock array are connected symmetrically to points on stator 2, and the currents between the aerials pass through the stator and induce currents in rotor 3 which, by leads 5, 6 are conducted through a D.F. receiver 17 to an oscilloscope 16, the sweep of which is synchronized with rotor 3. Stator 2 is a trough-shaped conducting ring in which moves rotor 3, mounted on an insulating disc 13 carried by shaft 14. Leads 5, 6 are connected to D.F. receiver 17 through a coupling transformer 18 which comprises a conductor 19 on a disc 21 rotating in a trough-shaped conductor 22, both conductors being split to provide ends to which connections are made. The rotor or stator winding may be doubled, either by providing another loop, Fig. 3 (not shown), or two semicircular coaxial lines, Fig. 4 (not shown). Other arrangements of rotor and stator are referred to, including placing the rotor in a plane parallel to the stator or between two stator parts, each of which is coupled to one antenna pair, Fig. 5 (not shown). Also the rotor may be replaced by a stationary ring over which brushes ride.
