Abstract

1,106,824. Aerials. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON HOUSTON-HOTCHKISS BRANDT. 12 Nov., 1965 [13 Nov., 1964], No. 48257/65. Heading H4A. An aerial system comprises two adjacent independently fed active elements having different radiation pattern characteristics, one of said active elements acting as a ground plane for the other. As described, a unipole aerial 14, Fig. 2, projects axially from a tubular support 12 mounted on an end face 6 of a drum-shaped artificial satellite 2, and two crossed dipoles 18, 18<SP>1</SP> extend outwards from the base of the unipole 14, being connected to the support 12 at the centres of their upper limbs. An information transmit/receive apparatus 28, Fig. 4, is connected by a coaxial cable 26 to the aerial 14. The lower limbs of the crossed dipoles 18, 18<SP>1</SP> are centre fed by a command and telemetering transmit/receive apparatus 40 via coaxial cables 36, 36<SP>1</SP> and baluns 34, 34<SP>1</SP>. A quadrature phase shifter 35 is interposed in the cable 36<SP>1</SP> so that the crossed dipoles 18, 18<SP>1</SP> operate as a turnstile aerial, with an omni-directional radiation pattern characteristic. In use, the attitude of the satellite (2), Fig. 5, (not shown), is stabilized so that the aerial (14) points to the centre of the earth. The angle (#) between the bisector of the main lobe (on a cross-section) of the radiation from the aerial (14) and the vertical is dependent upon the angle (γ) made by each half of the folded dipoles (18), (18<SP>1</SP>) with the axis of the satellite.
