Abstract

1500162 Aerials INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 13 March 1975 [14 March 1974] 10576/75 Heading H4A Radio frequency primary aerials 1a, 1b producing a rotating radiation pattern, such as used in TACAN systems, may be symmetrically and vertically stacked so that the radiation below the horizon is reduced to zero where the side lobe maximum of a single primary aerial would occur and the main beam is maintained at the same elevation as a single primary aerial (Figs. 3a and 3c, not shown), the degree of modulation being maintained approximately constant over the operational elevation range of the system. As claimed, a rotating pattern compound aerial comprises at least two elementary aerials 1a, 1b each having an active antenna 2a, 2b normal to and coaxial with a circular ground plate 3a, 3b and a circular ring of parasitic elements 5a, 5b coaxial with the active antenna; radio frequency energy supply means and control means for switching the parasitic elements in turn, the ground plates of the primary aerials being spaced parallel and coaxial, there being means for equally dividing the radio frequency energy supplied between the active antennas with a phase shift of #/n where n is the number of primary aerials. One embodiment described is a two-tier TACAN system (Fig. 1) in which the radiation pattern is stated to be undisturbed by the feed (Fig. 7). Radio frequency power is equally divided between frusto-conical active antennas 2a, 2b of length #/4 to #/2 where # is the wavelength corresponding to the radio frequency used. The antennas are fed through different lengths la, lb of semi rigid coaxial cable to give the required phase shift. The antennas are insulated from their respective ground plates by dielectric rings 18a, 18b the heights of which provide impedance matching to cables 10a, 10b. Ferrite rings 19 decouple the antenna 2b from tube 13. Parasitic switching circuits located in spaces 15-1, 15-2 are controlled through leads 14-1, 14-2. Other embodiments (not shown) include a three-tier TACAN system.
