Abstract
1,188,403. Secondary radar; aerial. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 18 May, 1967 [28 May, 1966], No. 23201/67. Headings H4A and H4D. The Specification describes a secondary radar installation including side lobe suppression means including a control antenna system having a cordioid polar diagram 6, Fig. 2 with a minimum aligned with the direction of main lobe 5 of the interrogating antenna. The control antenna system is mounted at the side of and rotates with, the interrogating antenna 2, Fig. 5, and comprises an omnidirectional antenna 7<SP>1</SP> and a directional antenna 14 having its main lobe aligned with that of antenna 2. A pulse generator 8 feeds the pulse P 2 , (pulses P 1 and P 3 being transmitted by antenna 2, and the three being received as shown in Fig. 4 by an aircraft in the main lobe 57) to antenna 7<SP>1</SP> directly and to antenna 14 via phase shifter 9 and attenuator 10. Phase shifter 9 is adjusted until the antennae 7<SP>1</SP> and 14 are fed in phase opposition, to give the derived minimum, and attenuator 10 is adjusted to give the desired depth of the minimum. In the arrangement of Fig. 7 the interrogating antenna 2<SP>1</SP> is formed of two series of log-periodic dipoles alternately fed in phase and in counter phase thereby producing sum and difference polar diagrams and synthesizing an interrogation beam with a sharpened lobe. Omnidirectional antenna 7<SP>1</SP> may comprise a vertical dipole, Fig. 6 formed from conductive cylinders 18 and 19 mutually insulated by sleeve 20 and making respective electrical contact with the outer 16 and inner 17 conductors of a coaxial feed cable. A radome 23 and conductive base plate 15 are also provided.
