Abstract

1,157,971. Aerials. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 24 Aug., 1966 [28 Aug., 1965 (2)], No. 37895/66. Heading H4A. The aerial system of an earth satellite comprises a plurality of individual aerials, and is arranged to give a pattern of radiation, Fig. 1, such that the field strength over the illuminated area of the earth's surface is substantially uniform, by adjustment of the relative phases of the said aerials. In a first embodiment an array of dipoles D, Fig. 3, is supplied through individual phase shifters P from a common feeder S. In a second embodiment an array comprises three adjacent paraboloidal reflectors with two phasing dielectric elements E, Fig. 4, adjacent the apertures of the outer two of the said reflectors. Variation of the characteristics of such an element may be obtained by adjusting a field determined by a control voltage (U), Fig. 5 (not shown). Individual aerials may comprise parts made by coating dielectric material (F), Fig. 6 (not shown), with metal films (M). The use of other kinds of aerials, such as helical or rod or horn types, is mentioned, and circularly polarized radiation may be provided.
