Abstract
846,624. Weight controlled glass spinning processes. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. July 1, 1958 [July 25, 1957], No. 20999/58. Class 56. In a glass spinning process in which molten material is fed from a furnace transversely reciprocated axially above a rotating drum on to the drum to form a solid cylindrical filamentous layer thereon, the initial weight of the furnace and its contents is measured at the beginning of the spinning operation and the furnace is replenished during spinning to approximately maintain this initial weight. This control may be effected by mounting a balance weight scale 20 on the traversing furnace carriage 10 and suspending the glass furnace 26 and the feeding funnel 28 from the weight sensitive plate 22 of the scale. By this arrangement the furnace and contents are continuously balance weighable during spinning and any loss of molten glass from the furnace is indicated by displacement of the balance arm in superstructure 24. After a predetermined loss (e.g. 1, 1b.) of molten glass the furnace may be recharged to its original weight. The process may be repeated until the charging glass available (e.g. 21 1bs.) is exhausted. A constant rate of spinning may be achieved by controlling the furnace temperature so that the time interval between recharges remains constant.
