Abstract

896,888. Automatic control systems. OWEN-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 23, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957], No. 41551/58. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVI] The level of an electrically-conductive liquid is determined by the current flow through the liquid to a stationary probe of low resistance having a short tapered tip immersed in the liquid, but otherwise of constant cross-section. In Fig. 1 continuous filaments 13 obtained through orifices in the bottom of a feeder 10 containing molten glass are supplied with size through a tube 15, gathered together by a member 14, and formed into a package 17 by a winder 19. Variations in the level of molten glass in feeder 10 vary the depth of immersion of a conically-tipped electric probe 42, and consequential variations in the alternating current passed through the probe and the molten glass from a source 51 are effective through a transformer 55, amplifier 43, and saturable reactor 41, to control the electric resistance heating of a pre-melting unit 30, fed with glass marbles from a hopper 35, so that the rate of supply of glass in a stream 33 is adjusted to correct the level in feeder 10. The temperature of the molten glass in feeder 10 is maintained constant by a thermocouple 22 which controls, through an amplifier 23 and a saturable reactor 21, the electric resistance heating of feeder 10. In a modification the variation of current to probe 42 controls an electric motor regulating the rate of feed of glass marbles directly to feeder 10.
