Class 100(4) The characters are formed in a mosaic selective printer by gaseous or liquid pressure acting either directly on an ink ribbon or through small print hammers. Moveable templates 1, Fig. 1, which act as valves are interposed between an air chamber 5 and an ink ribbon 2 and paper 3, and are operated to provide passages 4 through which, on movement of a piston 6, compressed air is forced to print a character by a series of dots. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 a block 8 housing printing plungers or hammers 7 is used so that the compressed air acts on the plungers which effect the printing. Various arrangements of templates having holes and slots are described and through passages 4 may be formed by the movement of one or more of the templates either by individual electro magnets or by a single electro magnet acting on all the templates while some are retained by latching means. When plungers 7 are employed they may be restored by the suction action of the piston 6, movement of the block 8, magnetic means, or by captive springs. Where characters smaller than the templates are required a block having converging passages is placed between the templates and the ink ribbon.
