Abstract

1340840 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 1 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 55486/72 Heading B6F Hammer impression.-A plurality of slidably mounted hammers 53, each with a head 55 capable of printing in more than one character position, are operated on by an equal plurality of spring loaded actuators (99, Fig. 3) slidably mounted in a plurality of bores 91 in a one piece magnetic block 61. The block 61 forms part of an electromagnet comprising a coil (27, Fig. 3), and core members (39, 41 and 45). The coil is continuously energized to attract the armature portions 51 of the plurality of hammers, into contact with a plurality of polepieces 63 formed on the upper edge the block 61. Each polepiece 63 is provided with a selectively energizable backing coil 29 which cancels the magnetic attraction created by the main coil (27). By rotating a plurality of set screws 97, the forward flight time of each hammer may be adjusted.
