Type-wheel machines; hammer impression arrangements.-A hammer assembly for a selective printer having a type carrier 10, Fig. 1, having a plurality of small and large impression area characters thereon is characterized by means for determining whether a character towards which a hammer 16 is to be impelled is a small or large impression area character and for urging the hammer with a first force towards a small impression area character and with a second force towards a large impression area character. Each hammer 16 is supported on spaced conductive, resilient and flexible support members 18 and 20, which also serve as terminals for a coil 22, received between a pair of spaced permanent magnets 24 and 26. Physically opposed poles on the magnets 24 and 26 are of opposite magnetic polarities so that when a current is initiated in the coil 22 in one direction the hammer will be propelled for impression. By reducing the amplitude of current when the hammers are to strike a small impression area character a reduced energy will be imparted to the hammers and vice versa. The hammers are restored by the resilient supports 18 and 20, rebound being prevented by maintaining the current in the coils 22 subsequent to the hammers striking the type carrier 10 so that the restored hammers strike the backstops 28 with a diminished energy. The backstops are adjustable to facilitate the control of intensity of impression. Types, discs and printing surfaces.-The small impression area characters, e.g. full stops and commas, which are printed at the bottom of a line are positioned in such a manner that they occupy the top of a character position on the drum 10, Fig. 1.
