Abstract

1,145,029. Typewriters etc.; selective printing. DALE ELECTRONICS. 31 May, 1966 [23 Oct., 1963], No. 24234/66. Heading B6F. [Also in Divisions G4 and G5] A programmer for a piano, typewriter or other keyed instrument consists of a vacuum chamber 12 exhausted by a pump 36, access to the atmosphere being provided by apertures 21, one for each of the keys to be operated, which are opened selectively by an apertured tape 68 driven between rollers 64, 66. When air enters through one of the holes 21, unblocked by a hole in the tape 68, a leaf spring 23 is forced into contact with a contact bar 28 to complete a circuit for a solenoid which acts directly on the instrument key. The solenoid assembly (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) may be mounted over the front of the keys or under the back and consists of two rows of solenoids, with one solenoid for each key. One row is mounted behind and slightly higher than the other. Both rows consist of two U- shaped channels which provide the magnetic circuits for all the solenoids in them and in which individual solenoids may be adjusted longitudinally and then clamped in position.
