Abstract

968,555. Feeding webs. DATA RECORDING INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. Dec. 7, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1962], No. 422/62. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G5] A pneumatic capstan comprises a rotor 8 having circumferential rows of perforations 38 and a stator 22 having ducts 34 and 36 connected to vacuum and pressure sources respectively. The stator has limited axial movement controlled by an electromagnetic transducer (not illustrated) and comprises a hemicylindrical part 48 and a further part 50. The two ducts 34 and 36 communicate respectively with transverse slots 40 and 42 which are formed alternatively in the hemicylindrical part 48. One of an adjacent pair of slots communicates with a row of perforations 38 according to the axial position of the stator 22 in the rotor 8. In one position, the perforations 38 will be in communication with the vacuum source so that the web 2 is pulled into driving contact with part of the surface of the rotor 8. In the other position, the perforations will be in communication with the pressure source, which operates to keep the web 2 from contact with the revolving capstan rotor 8. In a modification, only one row of perforations may be provided in the rotor which associates with one pair of slots in the stator. In this case, axially aligned grooves, each groove associated with one perforation, may be provided in the outer surface of the rotor. The Provisional Specification describes also a pneumatic capstan having a rotor 8 of similar form to that of the previous embodiment. An axially movable valve member 68, Fig. 6, is slidable within a stationary manifold block 60, and is provided with pairs of adjacent slots which alternatively communicate with vacuum and pressure ducts 72 and 74 respectively. The manifold block 60 is formed with a plurality of spaced slots 62, one for each row of perforations 38 in the rotor 8.
