Abstract
1355582 Feeding webs EASTMAN KODAK CO 17 June 1971 [17 June 1970] 28502/71 Heading B8R [Also in Division F2] A hollow cylindrical suction roller for gripping a moving web is furnished with a plurality of holes 11<SP>1</SP> providing communication between the exterior and interior of the roller, a first set of grooves 12 in the outer surface of the roller, and a second set of grooves 13 having a larger cross-sectional area than the grooves of the first set. Each of the holes 11<SP>1</SP> opens into a respective groove 13, and the grooves 13 are arranged to provide communication between the grooves 12 and the holes 11<SP>1</SP> even when a web is disposed on the surface of the member. The grooves 12 may extend either circumferentially of the roller, as shown, or axially (Figs. 4, 6 and 7, not shown), and the pattern of the grooves 12, 13 may be divided into sub-patterns having axial extents appropriate for different widths of web (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). The Specification explains how the dimensions of the holes and grooves may be calculated for optimum results, and discusses the advantages of rollers provided with these hole and groove systems.
