Abstract

1,218,801. Feeding webs. MASSON SCOTT THRISSELL ENG. Ltd., and W. H. BOSSONS. 9 May, 1968 [12 May, 1967], No. 22247/67. Heading B8R. A web-guiding member comprises a stack of laminar elements 6, each element having at least one hole 9, 10, 11 or 12, and airways 8 extending from the surface of the element and communicating with one of the holes. The stack of elements, clamped together, form a guide surface, and their aligned holes form at least one air duct extending longitudinally of the stack. Compressed air supplied to such a duct, issues from the airways 8 to form an air bearing on the guide surface. In Fig. 2, grooves in the face of the element are confronted by the face of an adjacent element and thus provide the airways 8 and an arcuate passage 7 leading to the air duct formed by the aligned holes 9. Alternatively, drillings may be made from the surface of element through to an air duct. In (Fig. 6) each element includes porous material (14) the pores of which constitute the airways. Holder plates having projections (16) are positioned between elements, the projections (16) being arranged to engage and locate the porous material portions of the adjacent elements. The elements 6 are recessed to accommodate the leg 2 of a T-shaped support member 1. End plates 4 bolted to the head 3 of the support member 1, clamp the elements together to form the stack. Additionally, pipes slotted to allow egress of air and extending through the air ducts 9 to 12, have threaded end portions carrying clamping nuts. A blanking plate (Fig. 4) may be positioned between adjacent elements 6, this plate having less holes than each element so as to interrupt at least one of the air ducts. The web-guiding member may be arranged as a web-tension sensing detector. The stock is assembled with the majority of the elements facing one way, and the remaining elements, forming one or more small groups, facing the other way. The airways of the small groups communicate with one air duct which is connected to an air pressure-sensing device. Tension variations will influence the pressure-sensing device which is used to indicate and/or control web tension.
