Abstract

846,081. Ladders. ROBERTS & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd., D., and LESTER, S. V. Oct. 26, 1956 [July 26, 1955], No. 21550/55. Class 20(2) A non-slip device for attachment to of each stile of a ladder near the foot comprises a member 6 to which there is-pivotally mounted for limited angular movement a sprag 7 which protrudes somewhat below the foot of the stile. The sprag 7 has a serrated lower edge 13. The pivotal movement of the sprag 7 is limited by a peg 15 in the member 6 engaging a slot 14 in the sprag. In use the foot of the stile 11 normally rests upon the ground and the sprag 7 rests with one corner on the ground as shown in Fig. 3. When the ladder starts to slip the sprag digs into the ground, rocks about its point of contact with the ground so that its pivot lifts the foot of the stile slightly thereby transferring all the weight to the sprag, as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the devices according to the invention of opposite hand to each other may be attached to the foot of each stile of a non-extending ladder so that it is immaterial which face of the ladder is in front.
