Abstract

Workpieces are painted by establishing an electric field between a paint distributer and the workpiece, electrostatically atomizing and charging the paint as it leaves the distributer, and then introducing substantially all the paint particles into an air stream flowing parallel to the electric field between the distributer and workpiece and towards the workpiece. As shown, paint is poured from a pipe 42 into a cup 40 whence it flows on to the upper surface of a stationary plate 36, charged to a high electrical potential by a source 44. The <PICT:0846063/III/1> paint is charged and atomized as it flows over the sharp edge 38 of the plate, the particles being drawn downwardly into the air stream produced by a squirrel cage rotor 50, which is mounted on an insulating shaft and rotated by a motor 30. In order to control the spray pattern, the louvres 54 of the rotor may be inclined to the vertical, or may be of herringbone design, and p the apices of the differently inclined parts may be in one plane or may undulate around the rotor. The workpieces 22 are carried on a conveyer 26 connected to the opposite pole of the source 44; the conveyer may provide a square path surrounding the distributer, the corners being outside the spray pattern. In a modification, a semicircular shield, connected to the source 44, may be provided adjacent the external surface of the rotor.
