Abstract

1,154,014. Spray-producers. E. MUELLER [trading as MESSRS. ERNST MUELLER]. 12 Aug., 1966, No. 36316/66. Heading B2F. A spray-producer, in which paint is first atomized mechanically and is then transported to an article to be coated by a low intensity electrostatic field and by compressed air at a low pressure, comprises a rotatable disc 11 secured to the shaft 12 of an air motor 13, a nozzle 24 adapted to supply the paint to the disc 11 whereby it is flung radially outwardly from an edge 15, a fixed disc 18 mounted coaxially with respect to the disc 11 and provided with a sharp edge 19, a compressed air chamber 20 so cooperating at its periphery 21 with the edge 19 to form an annular air discharge outlet, and a cable 25 arranged to supply a high voltage to the discs so that a field is set up between the peripheral edges 14, 19 of the discs and the article. The disc 11 may be rotated at between 4000-20,000 r.p.m. The edge 15 is stated to be free from charge because of the 'Faraday cage' effect and atomizes the paint mechanically. A baffle plate 17 collects surplus paint and returns it to the disc 11.
