Abstract

<PICT:0930948/III/1> <PICT:0930948/III/2> An electrostatic spray coating installation comprises a distributer, a high voltage source for creating an electrostatic field between the distributer and a workpiece, a supply device for supplying coating material to the distributer so that it falls in a charged condition from the distributer, an air pump rotor surrounding the distributer and adapted to force charged material falling from the distributer towards the workpiece in an airstream parallel to the field, and a blower device within the rotor and the profile of the distributer for directing air radially outwards towards the coating material falling from the distributer. Preferably the rotor is a squirrel cage rotor; the blower device may comprise a second squirrel cage rotor within the first, or a system of apertures in the rotor shaft from which compressed air is forced. The high voltage is applied between the workpiece and the distributer or a metal insert in the coating material supply pipe. As shown, a motor 20 (Fig. 1), drives a rotor 36 surrounding a distributer 38 comprising a plate with a raised rim supplied with coating material through tube 42, and a second rotor 44 within the first causes a stream of air to be directed outwards. In an alternative construction the blower comprises holes 50 (Fig. 2), in the shaft 341 of the rotor.
