Abstract

845,818. Magnetrons. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 25 1958 [Aug. 27, 1957], No. 27194/58. Class 39(1). A resonant cavity magnetron with a dispenser-type cathode protruding within recesses in the pole-pieces 13 14 has the cathode surrounded by cylinders 37 of soft-magnetic material in the regions where the cathode enters the recesses and attached to the cathode by supports 38 of small cross-section and high thermal resistance. Suitable magnetic material with the Curie point at 930‹C. has the composition 49% Co, 2% V and the remainder iron. A suitable cathode temperature is 850‹C. The supports 38 e.g. radial or annular projections, are clamped between threaded parts 32 and the cathode end parts 23, 34. The threaded parts 32 have flanges 33 acting as the cathode end rings. The magnetic cylinders 37 have an inner diameter larger than that of the active surface of the cathode and an outer diameter smaller than that of the end rings. The flanges 33 and the magnetic cylinders are coated with emission inhibiting material 44 such as zirconium, obtained by sintering zirconium-hydride powder in a solution of amyl-acetate in vacuo at 1100‹C., titanium or carbon. The main part of the cathode consists of a porous tungsten body 30 impregnated with a barium-calcium aluminate obtained by melting together a mixture of barium carbonate, aluminium oxide and calcium carbonate in a molecular ratio of 5 : 2 : 3. The cathode is activated at a temperature of 1100‹C. Suitable dimensions and spacings between the various cathode parts are given. The magnetron may be of the rising sun type or of the strapped type.
