Abstract

845,723. Expanding pulley gear. SHUFORD MILLS Inc. July 2, 1957 [Feb. 27, 1957], No. 20836/57. Class 80 (2). A fluid-operated V-belt expanding pulley comprises one or more pairs of flanges 52, 60; 65, 67; one 60, 65 of each pair being fixed relative to a driving or driven shaft 10 to which a piston 20 is also fixed, the other 52, 67 being axially movable and secured to or engaging a cylinder 25. The flanges 60, 65 are connected by screws 84 and axially spaced by distancepieces 61 integral with the flange 60. The piston 20 bears on or is secured to the flange 65 by struts 45, and has a central boss 21 setscrewed in a sleeve 15, whih is keyed and setscrewed to the shaft 10. The flanges 52, 67 are connected by screws 78 and are spaced from each other and from the cylinder 25 by brass sleeves 77, 82 on which the other flanges 60, 65 slide. The cylinder 25 being secured to a sleeve 50 which is integral with the flange 52, slides on a key 55 on the shaft sleeve 15, and carries a key 70 engaging the flanges 60, 65, and distance-pieces 61, 77, 82. The piston 20 is sealed by a rubber diaphragm 40, compressed air introduced through a rotating fitting 35, moves the cylinder 25 to the left, contracting the pulley, Fig. 5, whilst on release of the air pressure, belt tension expands the pulley, Fig. 6. The pulley may drive or be driven and may operate with a fixed diameter pulley on a bodily movable shaft, or with a similar variable pulley on a non-movable shaft.
