Abstract

845,722. Expanding pulley gearing. SHUFORD MILLS Inc. July 2, 1957, No. 20833/57. Class 80 (2). A fluid-operated V-belt expanding pulley comprises one or more pairs of flanges 31, 42, 37, 50, a cylinder 62 fixed to an axially movable sleeve 30 to which the flanges 31 and 37 are fixed and on which are independently axially slidable flanges 42, 50 connected to a piston 61. The sleeve 30 is integral with the flange 31, and bolts 40 hold the flange 37 against a shoulder 36 on the sleeve. The flanges 42, 50 are bolted together at 51; spaced by distance pieces 43 integral with the flange 42; and slide together on a key 45 fast on the sleeve 30. The sleeve 30 is free to move axially between a shoulder 21 on a sleeve 22 keyed and set screwed on the driving shaft 10 and a snap-ring 25. When a flexible tube 65 is inflated by attaching the usual nozzle of a compressed-air line to an inlet 70 containing a non-return valve (Fig. 7, not shown), the piston 61 is moved to the right, contracting the pulley, Fig. 5, the belts realigning themselves by axial movement of the sleeve 30 and cylinder 62. On release of the air pressure by opening the valve 70, the flanges are expanded by the tension of the belts, Fig. 6. The inflation valve 70 may be replaced by a rotating fitting permanently connected to a controllable air line. The belts drive a fixed diameter pulley on a solidlymovable drive shaft or a variable diameter pulley on a non-movable drive shaft. Specifications 845,723, 845,724 and 845,725 are referred to.
