Abstract
715,342. Collapsable spindles. LILLA EDETS PAPPERSBRUKS AKTIEBOLAG. Dec. 3, 1951, No. 28279/51. Class 100 (1) An expansible winding spindle having a pneumatically - expansible shell, is characterized in that the shell comprises a plurality of longitudinal bars secured together at their ends and supported by an axially extending shaft and that the pneumatic means for radially expanding the bars outwards in arc-like manner comprises a wall of elastic material surrounding the shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, a shell 3, adapted to support a cardboard tube on which web material may be wound, has a plurality of slits 21 forming bars 22. The shell is secured at either end to housings 4 by a screw 6, Fig. 3, the housings being secured to a shaft 1 by a pin 5. A hose 2 of rubber or other elastic material is secured at either end to the shaft 1 by a spring ring 7 clamped between an abutment 8 and a clamp ring 10. Air under pressure is supplied to the space 14 between the hose and shaft 1 through bores 12 and 13 and a valve 17. The hose 2 is expanded by the compressed air, such that the bars 22 bow outwardly to grip a cardboard tube 23. In a modification, the shell 3 may comprise a plurality of separate bars welded together at their ends. Alternatively, separate bars may be mounted at their ends in dovetail slots to permit axially sliding movement of the ends durmg bowing. Compressed air may be supplied by a hand pump. In a further modification, the hose 2 is replaced by a double-walled bag, preferably of rubber, connected to a tube supplying compressed air.
