Abstract

1414336 Mounting reels on shafts; valves AERO-SHAFT AB 14 May, 1973 [19 May 1972] 22938/73 Headings F2U and F2V An expansible mandrel comprising a core having axial grooves (e.g. as in Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) each housing an axial element 6 urgeable radially outwardly to grip the bore of a sleeve (e.g. on which is wound a roll of paper) by the inflation of hoses 7 in the grooves under the elements, each hose 7 having a separate radial channel 11 from a common axial channel 12 at the core end, has in the channel 12 a valve of which part is movable axially to close the radially inner ends of the channels 11. The valve may comprise an axially movable rod 20, 20<SP>11</SP> and a block 29, 33 of rubber &c., either movable with the rod, Fig. 4, and axially compressed by a spring 32, or axially compressible by axial movement of the rod 20<SP>11</SP> to close the channels 11. The rod 20, 20<SP>11</SP> may have a central passage 21 for inflation via a one-way valve 36. The rod may be movable axially either by manually pushing, Fig. 4, or by rotation, a threaded boss (34), Fig. 5 (not shown thereon) being housed in a threaded hollow (35) in the free end of the core. Alternatively the rod 20<SP>11</SP> may be biased to its "closed" position by a spring 38, and be moved to its "open" position by inflation air pressure supplied at 42 and acting on a piston 37. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,073,171.
