In a machine for compressing and strapping a wooden body such as a railroad tie, a portion 5 of the machine is raised from below into engagement with the body 25 which rests on a fixed feeding track. In the construction illustrated a strap laid horizontally across shoulders 6, 7 on a yoke 5 is bent round a railroad tie 25 when the yoke 5 is raised into engagement with the tie by a ram 29, and the margins of the strap are then bent over the tie when the shoulders 6, 7 are moved inwardly to compress the tie by rams 8, 9. The tie is engaged during the latter motion by chains 14, 15 secured to the shoulders 6, 7 and tensioned by rams 20, 21. The tie rests on sliding plates 30, 31 moved inwardly against biasing springs by members 39 on the chains 14, 15. Two machines such as that illustrated may operate on opposite ends of a tie, or a single machine may be employed in conjunction with a turntable for turning the tie. The machines may be mounted on three wheels 34, 36 and may have a cranked or jointed tow bar 32 formed with sprags 33. The machine is preferably controlled by foot pedals 38. The track 23 may be inclined to assist in feeding the ties and may have rollers.
