Abstract

844,710. Vehicle recovery cradles. MANN EGERTON & CO. Ltd. March 11, 1959 [March 17, 1958], No. 8492/58. Class 78 (3). [Also in Group XXV] A vehicle recovery cradle comprises frame members 1 which extend along the sides and beyond one end of a vehicle and which are connected, e.g. by sliding clamps 8, 9 (see Group XXV), to a cross-member 7 suspended by a hook 22 from the recovery vehicle. Each frame member 1 is hinged at 2 for stowing but secured by a pin 3 when in use. The frame members are secured to the vehicle by a strap 20 while frame members 1 support the wheels on lugs 13, 14. The lugs 14 are clamped to the frame 1 for adjustment relative to the fixed lugs 13. In a modification (Fig. 8, not shown), the cross-member 7 is replaced by a channel-member through which threaded ends of the side members protrude to be secured by nuts. Alternative holes in the channel allow variation in the cradle width. In this modification the strap 20 is replaced by a cable which connects the free ends of the two side-members, and which passes through the open doorways of the vehicle, being supported off the floor of the vehicle by means of protective packers. The lugs 13, 14, supporting the wheels, have threaded ends which bolt through gusset-plates fixed to the tubular side-members.
