844,429. Rotary-scythe mowers. SMITH, A., and BAGGS, B. D. Oct. 27, 1958, No. 34370/58. Class 6(3). A rotary-scythe mower comprises a housing 13, a rotary scythe 20 mounted therein, a wheel 23 attached to the housing on a fixed transverse axis on one side and a pair of casters 31 disposed in longitudinal alignment on the other side, which is open to expose the cutter 20, the wheel arrangement being such that the machine can cut close to obstructions. The wheels 31 are carried by a longitudinally-disposed support 28 bolted to the housing and arched at 28<SP>1</SP> to clear the casters. Shims 30 mounted under the securing bolts 29 permit adjustment of the cutting height. The blade is driven by a small motor 20 directly connected to the vertical shaft 17 carrying the scythe 20 which has detachable blades 21 at its ends with downturned corners 21<SP>1</SP> for causing an updraught. Rollers 34 are mounted in the wall 14 of the housing to avoid damage to the housing by obstructions. A rotary-disc edge-cutter 37, Fig. 6, may be mounted on the housing and driven by a belt 40 form a cross-shaft 42 geared to the scythe-shaft 17.
