Abstract

844,382. Transfers. DENNISON MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Jan. 8, 1957 [Jan. 9, 1956], No. 778/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 100(2) A heat transfer comprises a backing and a release coating thereon, said coating comprising Fischer-Tropsch wax on the reaction product of the oxidation of a hard aliphatic hydrocarbon wax, or both, the melting point being 50-110‹C. and penetrometer hardness below 15 as measured with 100 grams for 5 seconds at 25‹C. The oxidised products include those of natural and synthetic hydrocarbon waxes such as petroleum waxes, low molecular weight polyethylene, and waxes obtained from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and should have an acid value of 5-40 and a saponification value of 25-100. Small amounts of fillers and resins may be added. The oxidation products are prepared by heating the hydrocarbon waxes in the presence of oxygen or other oxidising agents, and may be subjected to further chemical modification, such as esterification, before use. The waxes may be applied by emulsions, preferably prepared with alkalis or organic amines, hot melts, or as solvents solutions. The design is printed on the wax coating by letterpress, rotogravure or flexographic presses, with conventional inks including inks made from powdered metals. Examples of coatings are (1) 50 parts Duroxon H-110, an oxidised Fischer-Tropsch wax, melted, 5 parts morpholine added with agitation, and mixture poured into 280 parts boiling water, resulting emulsion cooled. (2) 2 parts stearic acid, 3 parts triethanolamine and 10 parts of AC-Polythylene 629, an oxidised, emulsifiable, low molecular weight polyethylene, are melted at 100‹C. and poured into 40 parts of boiling water, emulsion then being chilled. (3) 2 parts stearic acid, 3 parts triethanolamine and 10 parts of Cardis 320, an oxidised, emulsifiable, microcrystalline wax, are melted at 100‹C., poured into 40 parts of boiling water, and the emulsion chilled with agitation. (4) Paraflint R6 and 105. The backing is preferably unsized paper, e.g. super-calendered sulphite paper, but may be metal foil, wood, fabric, plastic, glass, or "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark).
