In an electromagnet of the kind in which, upon energization of the coil, an armature or core is pulled into the field of the coil, the core is blocked in both the unattracted and the attracted positions by a locking member of magnetic material which is spring-actuated in the unattracted position of the core and actuated by the magnetic field in the attracted position. The core 1 may carry a bracket 7 and be locked in the unattracted position by pins 4 projecting into holes in bracket 7 and held there by springs 5. Excitation of coil 3 produces flux leaking through the pins 4 which are thereby inwardly attracted to free the bracket and hence the core 1 which is then drawn into the coil and blocked in that position at the end of its stroke by the pins 4 pressing against the reduced portion of core to engage behind the shoulder formed thereby (Fig. 2, not shown). An alternative arrangement using two hooked arms which engage with projections on the magnet casing is described (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown).
