Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula: <FORM:0844216/IV (c)/1> where R1 is an alkyl group of 1-3 C atoms, R2 is H, Hlg or Me, R3 is H, Hlg or alkyl, R4 is H, Me or Et, B is a ketomethylene residue bound to the azo link in a position vicinal to the enol group or an aromatic residue bound to the azo link in a position vicinal to the OH group, X is H or Hlg, alkyl, -NH aryl or a group where Y1 and Y2 are the same or different and are each H, alkyl or oxyalkyl. The invention includes chromium, cobalt, iron and nickel complexes of one or two dyes of the above formula or of one of the above dyes and one of formula HO-A-N= N-C-OH where A and C are the same or different and are each an organic group bound to the azo link in a position vicinal to the OH group and may bear Hlg, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro or -SO2 -N(X1) 2 groups where X1 and X2 are the same or different each being H or alkyl. The metalfree dyes are made by diazotising an appropriate aniline derivative and coupling with a compound of formula HB(X) OH. Indicated as coupling conponents are 5-pyrazolones, 2, 4-dihydroxyquinolines, phenols and naphthols, a variety of which are specified. Metallisation is effected in conventional fashion. The metal products colour proteinaceous substances e.g. leather and hair and polypeptide fibres such as wool, silk, casein, superpoly-amide and -urethane fibres. Weakly alkaline, neutral or weakly acid baths are preferred. Examples and a table are provided illustrating the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing processes in which a variety of shades, e.g. yellow, red, grey, green and brown are obtained on wool.
