Abstract

843,838. Radioactive substances ; luminescent materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 2, 1958 [Sept. 5, 1957], No. 28033/57. Classes 39(1) and 39(4). A radioactive substance comprises a clathrate compound of an organic substance and a radioactive gas molecularly trapped therein. A compound of quinol and krypton containing the radioactive isotope krypton -85 is formed by saturating a solution of quinol in a mixture of ethanol and water with radioactive krypton under pressure and then cooling the solution to deposit a crystalline powder. The powder may be mixed with zinc sulphide containing an activator and with a solution of polymethyl methacrylate in trichlorethylene to form a phosphorescent paint; polystyrene may replace the polymethyl methacrylate. Alternatively the powder may be incorporated in a polythene moulding composition to form a beta-emitting radioactive source, or with the addition of a phosphor, a light source. Another radioactive gas referred to is tritium sulphide.
