Abstract

A neutron absorbing shield is formed of boric anhydride with alumina and lime, or silica and lime, or magnesia and lime. The material may be used as a space-filling powder or an an aggregate in a concrete. When used as a protection against fast neutrons a neutron moderator is added, for example, a ground rock containing hydrogen. A vitreous form is prepared by fusing the mixture in a crucible and grinding the cooled mass. The materials used have a softening point above 500‹ C. and are thus suitable for fast reactors, their thermal expansion is compatible with hydraulic binders and they have a low solubility.
