Abstract
894,494. Building blocks. DRATH, H. May 5, 1958, No. 14342/58. Class 87(1) [Also in Group XL(a)] Structural elements for protection against X-ray and gamma radiation are made from a mixture of cement or concrete and a finely divided natural mineral or ore containing a heavy metal or heavy metal compound (see Group XL(a)). The mixture may also contain substances which absorb neutrons, for example boron, cadmium, and gadolinium, and their compounds. The material may be formed under high pressure into plates 5 having V-shaped projections 6 and grooves 7 which fit one within the other; preferably the angle of the V is 60 degrees or less. For protection against neutrons of high velocity, a layer of material having high hydrogen content may be provided facing the radiation source; suitable materials are paraffin, cellulose, and concrete with a high water content.
