Abstract
920,128. Radiation absorbing materials. ELEKTROSCHMELZWERK KEMPTEN G.m.b.H. Sept. 2, 1959 [Sept. 2, 1958], No. 30006/59. Class 39 (4). A neutron screening material comprises a mixture of a neutron absorbing filler having an atomic absorption cross-section for neutrons of at least 100 barns with an organic silicon compound. Suitable neutron absorbents are boron, cadmium, hafnium, mercury, and compounds thereof; reference is also made to the use of samerium, europium, gadolinium, and dysprosium. Gamma rays are screened if an element of high atomic weight is present. Other optional constituents are a cellulose derivative, a polymeric fluoro compound, and a polyolefine. The mixture may be formed into flexible plates or foils in which a woven textile material may be incorporated. In examples, flexible plates are formed by vulcanizing a mixture of dimethyl polysiloxane or dihydroxy-dimethyl polysiloxane, silicic acid or quartz, a cross-linking agent, and boron carbide or boron nitride. A lacquer is prepared from a silicone lacquer and cadmium yellow containing Cd 113.
