Abstract
902,799. Radiation shielding material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 17, 1960 [Aug. 24, 1959], No. 28911/59. Class 39 (4). A radiation shield suitable for the attenuation of neutrons is constructed by packing a hollow shape with discrete chips of a solid material containing at least 3% by weight of hydrogen and filling the interstices between the chips with a matrix material containing at least 3%by weight of hydrogen. The chips may be made of polyethylene, nylon, or polyethylene terephthalate, and the matrix material may be a mineral oil, water, a silicone fluid, ethylene glycol, a polyester, polystyrene, or an epoxy-type resin. Neutron-absorbing substances, for example boron or cadmium or an oxide or carbonate thereof, or gamma-absorbing substances, for example lead, barium, or iron, or their compounds, may be added to the material of the solid chips, or may be provided as a separate layer. Specification 878,465 is referred to.
