Abstract
1,260,342. Radiation absorbing materials. F. MARXEN, and R. E. VOGEL. 5 Sept., 1969 [6 Sept., 1968], No. 44152/69. Addition to 1,110,181. Heading G6R. A material for shielding against radio-active radiation, especially gamma rays and neutrons, comprises 10-60% by weight of a lead, bismuth, tungsten, zirconium, iron, tin, cadmium, lithium or barium compound of a saturated fatty acid mixed with a natural or synthetic rubber or a synthetic plastic. Suitable synthetic materials are polyurethanes, polyamides, polyesters, epoxy resins, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyfluoroethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polystyrene, polymethacrylates, and copolymers thereof, chloroprene, butadiene-styrene copolymer,. polyisobutylene, and alkyl polysulphides. Boron may be present as finely divided elemental boron, boron carbide, an alloy of boron carbide and aluminium, boron trioxide, boric acid, or glycerol boric acid ester. Other additives referred to are finely divided lead, lead oxide, lead sulphide, tungsten and tungsten oxides, iron and iron compounds, cadmium, cadmium oxide, and cadmium sulphide. The additives may be mixed with polymerizable material and the mixture then cured. In examples the fatty acid compounds used are lead stearate, cadmium stearate, and lead montanate; other ingredients in addition to those specified above are hexahydrophthalic acid, diethylene triamine, butyl acetate, and zinc oxide. The shielding material may be used to form plates or blocks, calendered sheets, lacquer coatings, or protective clothing.
