Abstract
1500899 Radiation absorbing materials G HOPP [trading as INGENIEURBURO DR-ING GERHARD HOPP] 13 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 47738/71 Heading G6R [Also in Division F3] A neutron shield for an armoured vehicle is made by applying to the armoured vehicle a sheet of thermoplastic plastics material containing more than 5% by weight of a neutron absorbing material, e.g. boron, boron carbide, boron nitride, lithium or a lithium compound, and deforming the sheet to correspond with the surface of the vehicle. The plastics material may be polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, a polyamide, or a polyurethane. The shielding may be in the form of panels, plates, or foils, and may be applied for example to the outer iron wall of a tank and coated with a protective foil of a plastics material; several shielding layers may be used with intermediate iron layers.
