Abstract

1,034,533. Radiation absorbing materials. PNEUMATIQUES CAOUTCHOUC MANUFACTURE ET PLASTIQUES KLEBER COLOMBES. June 5, 1964 [June 7, 1963], No. 23501/64. Heading G6R. A material for protection against gamma rays and neutrons consists of a creep-resistant mixture of a polyolefine and a lead compound rich in lead. Lead compounds specified are litharge, lead dioxide, lead sesquioxide, minium, lead carbonate (e.g. cerussite), lead sulphide (e.g. galena), divalent lead chloride, and lead sulphate. The polyolefine may be high or low pressure polyethylene, polypropylene, or a copolymer. The ingredients may be mixed at 130-220‹ C. and formed into bricks. Boron or a derivative thereof may be added to absorb slow neutrons. The material is suitable for the protection of nuclear reactors mounted on vehicles.
