Deshalb kommen dafür nahezu sämtliche Stoffe in Frage.
Material for shielding against neutrons as well as a, B and y rays
It is known that the density of the materials used is decisive for the absorption of a and ss rays. That is why almost all substances can be used. It is also known that the absorption cross-section of the atoms built into the absorbers is responsible for the absorption of neutrons, while the y-absorption is crucially dependent on the atomic number of the substances used. On the basis of these findings, sufficient shielding against all rays can be achieved by using certain layer thicknesses, as is the case with e.g. B. is the case with the concrete walls containing heavy spar in reaction plants.
The use of cadmium, boron and similar substances as neutron absorbers in the form of control rods, shielding plates, is known in reactor technology and in radiation protection.
The shields known up to now are rigid and thus difficult to adapt to the conditions existing in laboratories, for example. On the other hand, various of the substances suitable for the above purpose, e.g. B. cadmium, toxic, which makes the technical utilization of these substances extremely difficult.
A shield has now been found which does not have the existing deficiencies and which meets all laboratory and technical requirements. The material according to the invention for shielding against neutrons and a, s and y rays is characterized in that it contains plastics and / or natural substances as binders and also contains neutron-absorbing fillers. This shield is malleable, flexible and can also be made in thin films and foils.
Neutron-absorbing elements, their compounds, and all possible mixing variations of these two components can be used as neutron-absorbing fillers.
Organic and inorganic compounds can be used as long as the percentage and the absorption cross section of the absorbing atom are large enough. In addition to boron, cadmium, hafnium, mercury and their compounds and all possible variations in the mixture of the above substances, rare earths, for example praseodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, dysprosium, have also proven to be favorable. But other substances with an absorption cross-section of at least 100 barn can also be used with good success. The selection of good neutron absorbers with a high atomic number Z enables not only shielding against neutrons, a and ss rays, but also a relatively large y shielding.
Particularly favorable conditions are achieved through the use of separated isotopes, which have a high absorption cross-section, or their compounds and mixtures. You can thereby achieve particularly thin and light absorber layers, for example in the form of films and paints. So z. B. paints are obtained which contain the cadmium isotope 113 or isotopes with an absorber cross-section of at least 1000 barn.
Suitable carriers for these fillers are organic silicon compounds and also polymeric vinyl and fluorine compounds, polymeric olefins and cellulose derivatives and mixtures of the polymers mentioned. However, molding compounds, the plastics as binders or main substance in addition to organic or inorganic substances, which can also be produced synthetically, are suitable.
Textile fabrics impregnated or laminated with suspensions, emulsions or solutions can also be used to produce shields against neutrons as well as a, s and y rays. These shields can also be used in laboratories for shielding housings, mouldable protective walls, neutron protective clothing, shielding for portable neutron sources such as radium, beryllium, room linings, shields for meteorologic and similar measuring instruments, e.g. B. in space projectiles or meteorological or other devices for researching high altitudes and radiation can be used protective coatings.
example 1
500 g of a silicone rubber mixture are mixed with 400 g of boron carbide of a boron carbide grain mixture and a shield against neutrons and a, B and y rays is pressed and vulcanized from this in the form of a plate. The plate is flexible and resistant up to about 2500 C. For an area of 600 cm2, there is 0.667 g of boron carbide or 520 mg of boron per 1 cm2.
Example 2
Polyvinyl chloride or silicone mixed with boron nitride as a filler is mixed in a known manner on the calender and processed on the press to form shielding plates against neutrons or, in a deep-drawing process, to form any desired shielding against neutrons and a, s and y rays.
As in Examples 1 and 2, mixtures of plastic with more or less boron carbide, boron nitride, or other neutron absorbing elements and / or their compounds can be produced, the proportion of the first substances also being greater than the proportion of plastic. If a certain boron content or
Boron carbide content or content of neutron absorbing elements or compounds per unit area required, the plate can be varied accordingly in thickness. It is also possible, for example, to protect a pipeline by wrapping it with a thin boron carbide plastic film or a film that contains neutron absorbing elements and / or their compounds in a binding agent, the film being placed on top of one another in different layers until it is sufficiently thick can.
Example 3
Cadmium yellow from cadmium 113 is added to a silicone varnish in a sufficient amount determined by calculation and processed in a known manner. Containers and pipes in which neutrons are imitated are painted with this varnish and thus provided with a shield against neutrons as well as a, s and y rays.
All synthetic and natural binders can be used for such coatings, provided the physical properties correspond to the given conditions. If necessary, fillers with an even higher absorption cross-section can be used instead of cadmium yellow. The paints mentioned are also ideally suited as a paint for neutron physical instruments in order to absorb stray neutrons. The lacquers can also be used for impregnation.
