Abstract
A nuclear reactor control rod material is a ceramic formed from a substance of high neutron capture cross-section and one or more of MgO, CaO, Al2O3, SiO2; the substance is preferably B2O3, the proportion of boron being 12%-35% by atoms. Gd or Eu may be used instead of boron. The material may be cast or sintered. A particular material has MgO, B2O3 and SiO2 in molecular ratio 20 : 9 : 1.
