Abstract
A neutron-absorbing fired ceramic mass comprises one or more finely divided oxides of gadolinium, samarium and didymium dispersed throughout the mass in amount 4% to 8% of its total weight, i.e. insufficient to cause porosity in the fired material. In an example a plastic mixture of ball and China clays, felspar (Narvic "Spae"), bauxilite, didymium oxide and water was extruded into rods and fired at 1200 DEG C.
