Abstract
An alcohol is dehydrogenated to the corresponding aldehyde using a Ag-Cu catalyst containing 0,2 (preferably 0,2-10, particularly 0,3-5)% Cu and preferably up to 0,4% of an anti-sintering agent e.g. MoMnCrV or Si (particularly). The alcohol is preferably aliphatic, particularly methanol, other examples being ethanol, propanol, butanol, benzyl alcohol, o-,m- and p-methylbenzyl alcohols and ethylene glycol. The catalyst may be supported in an inert material e.g. granular quartz or granular, acid-washed silicon carbide. Preferably the reaction is carried out in a cyclic manner and the catalyst may be regenerated with an oxygen containing gas. Reaction conditions are:-550-750 (preferably 625-675) DEG C. temperature and space velocity 100-5000 (preferably 500-2000).ALSO:A catalyst comprising at least 0.2 (preferably 0.2-10 particularly 0.3-5)% by weight of copper, preferably up to 0.4% by weight of an anti-sintering agent (e.g. Mo, Mn, G or V, but especially Si) the balance being silver, is used to dehydrogenate alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes at 550-750 (preferably 625-675) DEG C. and a space velocity of 100-5000 (preferably 500-2000). The alcohol (see Group IV(b)) is preferably aliphatic, particularly methanol, the catalyst may be supported on a material inert to the reaction, such as granular quartz or granular, acid-washed silicon carbide. It is preferred to carry out the process in a cyclic manner wherein the catalyst may be regenerated with an oxygen-containing gas when its activity has fallen to an unsatisfactory level.ALSO:A silver-copper alloy containing at least 0.2 (preferably 0.2-1.0, particularly 0.3-5)% copper and preferably incorporating up to 0.4% silicon as anti-sintering agent (or possibly Mo, Mn, Cr or V as said agent) is used as a catalyst in dehydrogenation of alcohols to aldehydes. The catalyst may be prepared by melting the mixed alloy constituents and pouring the molten alloy to form a powder or by melting the mixed alloy constituents together with aluminium, solidifying the alloy and leaching out the aluminium.
