Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0843695/IV(b)/1> (wherein X represents an acyl group, R1 a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or acyl group, R2 a hydrogen or iodine atom or an amino, substituted amino or nitro group, and Y a hydrogen atom or a methyl group), and a process for the manufacture of substituted diphenyl ethers wherein 3-iodo-5-nitro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is reacted in the presence of a tertiary organic base with an aliphatic or aromatic sulphonic acid halide and the product reacted, without isolation of the ammonium compound formed, with a phenol of the general formula: <FORM:0843695/IV(b)/2> (wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or acyl group and R2 and R3 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an amino, substituted amino or nitro group, or R1 may form part of a ring with R2 or R3, the resulting compound of the general formula: <FORM:0843695/IV(b)/3> is condensed with an acylaminoacetic acid, the resulting oxazolone derivative is split up with the aid of an alkali metal alcoholate or an aqueous solution of an alkali to form the corresponding a -acylaminocinnamic acid or ester thereof, the nitro group or groups is or are reduced to an amino group or groups, the latter is or are replaced by iodine by way of the diazonium compound, if desired the double bond in the resulting 3:5-diiodo-4-phenoxyacylaminocinnamic acid derivative is hydrogenated with hydriodic acid and red phosphorus, and, if desired, a further iodine atom is introduced into the 31-position by the action of potassium p-toluenesulphoiodamide in an alkaline medium.
