Abstract

Unsaturated polyester resins, free from undesirable physiological action and copolymerisable to yield products free from stickiness are made by polyesterifying a mixture of (a) an ethylenically unsaturated alpha beta-dicarboxylic acid or anhydride (b) tetrahydrophthalic acid or anhydride (c) a dihydric alcohol and (d) a trihydric alcohol. In examples ployesters made by reacting a mixture of fumaric acid, tetrahydrophthalic acid, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol and glycerine in the presence of hydroquinone and, if desired, of ethylbenzene are inhibited by the further addition of hydroquinone and then made into lacquers by the addition of styrene, cobalt naphthenate, cumene hydroperoxide, butyl acetate and acetylcellulose.
